HAIM
I know I have this stupid little ‘listenability scale’ thing that I like to talk about when I am talking about music and whether I like something or how I judge whether I like something musically.
It’s not the most in-depth assessment you can give to a song or a band or a playlist or what have you.
But it works for me.
And HAIM rates high on the listenability scale.
I like HAIM a lot - I listened to each of their albums a few years ago, probably when the third one came out and I almost listened to them straight through one after the other because at no point was I like, “OK, that’s enough, I’ve had enough.”
See? Listenabilty.
And they just had a new album come out, so obviously I was going to give that a go.
It’s a little different than their previous albums - which, to be fair, I haven’t listened to thoroughly in a while. I tend to stick to the songs I really like and listen to them a bunch - ‘Little of Your Love’ and ‘The Wire’ are my favorites.
But I feel like those songs are a touch more upbeat than the songs on this album, which I guess goes with the theme. ‘I quit’ is the name of the album, and it’s kind of an anti-long-term relationship album.
Still the songs are good.
And HAIM is one of those bands where I feel like it’s easy to listen the lyrics while listening to the music, so you really hear what they’re singing about.
I’m writing this after just one full listen to the album - early returns have ‘Now it’s time’ as my favorite song - a little touch of Vampire Weekend in there.
But I think after a couple of other listens I’ll like some of those early songs on the album more too. I was listening to them while running, so my attention was a little divided. One of them is the one they’re playing on the radio here - maybe ‘Relationships’?
There was a touch of Sheryl Crow’s sound in one of the songs too.
I don’t often think of comparisons when I’m listening to HAIM - they don’t usually remind me of anyone else, which is one of the things I like about them.
I also like that they’re siblings.
All told, now that I’ve reminded myself about HAIM, and how much I like their music, I’m sure I’ll be listening to them a lot more this summer.
