My New Mets Shirt
Last week at the Mumford & Sons concert I brought a sweatshirt. (That’s “brought” with an ‘r’. As in, I brought one from home. Not bought one there. I trust you to read that correctly, but I could see myself making a mistake like that and I didn’t want you to start off this blog post with that kind of a misunderstanding.)
You know, a hooded pullover sweatshirt.
It was slightly too much - but I needed a layer for the evening when the sun was gone.
This is the thing these days. I never used to get cold like that, but now I get a little cold. Or, at least, I don’t get too warm if I put on a sweatshirt in weather that doesn’t necessarily require a full sweatshirt. (And I’m not talking the 100-degree days we’ve had here - that’s a different story. I am not that full-blown old guy.) (Yet.)
Anyway, I said to Kathy it would be perfect if I had a real lightweight sweatshirt to throw on on a night like that. I do have one, but it’s for a brewery I no longer frequent and I haven’t decided whether that one is still worth wearing.
Which brings us to Monday night at Citi Field.
The first stop with my daughters is usually the team store, because why not? When I went in May I ended up getting a hat for my daughter, and I figured, again, why not, and I bought another Mets hat.
And then this time my daughter wanted to see if she could find a good t-shirt, which I wholeheartedly endorsed, and then I realized, ooh, I bet I could find a lightweight sweatshirt here.
There was not much…and then I stumbled upon the shirt you see pictured above.
It was not cheap.
Had I not been looking for this exact thing just days before I would never have considered paying more than $100 (but less than $200) on such a shirt.
But it was good timing for the Mets team store I guess.
I bought the shirt, along with a t-shirt for my daughter and a third item that I will likely tell you about on another day when I run out of other things to write about. (Maybe I should also tell you about the hat. I like it a lot.)
Now to the matter of wearing the shirt - the conditions have to be perfect.
A slight breeze. Not too hot, not too cold. And I can’t be eating something drippy or something like red sauce because if I get a spot on this light-colored shirt that I spent too much money on I will be irrationally (no, I guess it would be rationally) upset.
Obviously there’s no hood, and there’s a collar instead - and it’s not a full zip. It’s not perfect. But it’s a great shirt.
I’m looking forward to a night that maybe dips into the 60s…maybe lower…maybe even this weekend…when I can wear my new lightweight Mets sweatshirt.
