Stay At Home Dad Week 25 - Nothing Like The Last Minute

This is the blog equivalent of the blank page in the notebook.

(Sunday Paper, Year V, Issue 36)

This picture here at the left, that’s me, on Saturday afternoon, sitting on the deck, without a Sunday Paper written.

Yes, Saturday afternoon, as in yesterday afternoon.

I’m going to be honest with you, because you’re loyal readers…

And the fact that you’re here reading my work each week is the reason I usually feel inspired enough to write something each week.

But this week, man, I just had nothing.

I thought about it all week and nothing came up to write about.

So I’m going to write about that.

I’m not sure I’ve taken you behind the curtain before, but here’s how the Sunday Paper usually works:

(Haha, “behind the curtain.” Like there’s some secret.)

I usually write it early in the week, or at least have the idea for it by mid-week, and then start it before Friday.

AT THE LATEST, it’s Friday that I’m writing the Sunday Paper…but if I’m writing it on Friday, I’m usually writing the whole thing.

If I’m writing it earlier in the week, I usually get most of my ideas out and then revisit it a couple of times before finalizing it.

Then on Saturday it’s finishing touches, a last proofread, and schedule it to be posted by Sunday at 7am. (Did you know I post it every Sunday morning at 7? Whether I’m awake on time to post the link on Facebook right away is a different story…but lately I have not been sleeping past 7 on any day, no matter how hard I try. That’s a story for another day. Maybe it should have been this week’s Sunday Paper topic.)

This week I just kept putting it off because nothing was resonating with me. I have a big idea that I’ll probably write about next week but I just couldn’t think of an appropriate picture to post along with it, which is a lame excuse for not writing a post, but here we are.

I thought about taking the week off. I thought about re-posting some old post I liked. But I didn’t love either of those options.

I went for a quick run on Saturday morning and realized I should make a running play list on my phone. So I toyed with the idea of creating that playlist and writing about it and then asking for your feedback….only to discover a while back I actually had created a playlist for when I run and it included many of the songs I would have included. So good work, past me. I still welcome your suggestions, if you’re so inclined.

(I also will need to add to that playlist because it’s only something like 34 minutes and lately my runs have been mostly walks, so they’re taking closer to an hour.)

And so suddenly it’s Saturday, and we’re left with this. Me describing to you my process. Which didn’t turn out all that bad.

I’ll add this - it suddenly seems to be Saturday a lot for me. Is that happening to you? The days are kind of zipping by and part of that is because I’ve had busy weeks, which as I always say is a good thing, but part of that is this weird sense of not having the same sense of time as usual. Maybe this would have been a good Sunday Paper topic.

Well, it’s too late for that.

As always, I thank you for reading. This is better than skipping a week, for sure, and it’s better than re-posting something that you can always go back and read on your own.

I hope you have a lovely Labor Day, and as we kick off the end-of-summer routine (and for some people the back-to-school routine) you are safe and healthy and managing through this crazy time we’re going through.
